HIPAA stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and is a federally mandated law signed in 1996. The HIPAA privacy rule is one of seven sets of rules being issued to implement HIPAA. The Privacy Rule, sets standards for how protected health information should be controlled by setting forth what uses and disclosures are authorized or required and what rights patients have with respect to their health information. Only health plan, health care clearinghouses, health care providers and other entities that exchange health information are responsible for complying with the HIPAA regulations. The Notice of Privacy Practices describes what the County's policies are in regards to use, disclosure, and protecting your information in regards to HIPAA
